Calling
Mikel’s calling as a
counselor was confirmed in 1992 through a spiritual gift discovery tool,
encouragement from others, and a dream. While Mikel is qualified to counsel
people in a variety of ways, he has been called specifically to help couples
make a positive difference in their marriages and families. Mikel left a 25 year
career in landscape architecture to follow God’s leading.
Education
Mikel is a graduate of
Cincinnati Christian University, Seminary
¾
MAC program (Master of Arts in Counseling). Mikel has diligently studied both
Scripture and text to present himself unashamed as one who handles the word of
truth correctly [2 Timothy 2:15].
Philosophy
Scripture reminds us that
God is not a God of chaos but is rather a God of order [1 Cor. 14:33].
The world would be a very frightening place if repeating the same activities
yielded different results each time. To remind us of this fact, the sun rises
every morning and sets every evening. Apart from the sun’s predictability we
would not be able to mark our time here on Earth. Because God is a God of order
He has incorporated natural laws, principles and precepts into his creation. As
created beings, humans also often act predictably in reaction to their
environment. It is because God created all things with stable properties that we
are able to study them. Human beings are no exception. As a consequence Mikel
believes that all behaviors serve some purpose and therefore these behaviors can
be understood. Furthermore, Mikel believes that distressing behaviors are only
meaningful within the context of relationships. In other words, relationships
are the vehicle that magnify dysfunctional attitudes and beliefs. Conversely it
is only through significant relationships that meaningful change can occur. The
goal of counseling then is to form a relationship between counselor and client
to serve as a catalyst for change. Mikel believes that many of life’s problems
can be overcome by a deep and meaningful relationship with Christ. When God’s
Spirit becomes active in the counseling process there is then hope for health
and healing of the mind, body and spirit.
Interests
Mikel has been an active
member of Kingsway Christian Church since 1992 where he has served in the
Decision Counseling Ministry and teaches regularly in the Adult Bible School
program. Mikel has attended many Promise Keepers conferences and in 1997
participated in, “Stand in the Gap” in Washington, D.C. to pray for local and
national leaders. In addition, Mikel has received training in Nouthetic
Christian Counseling (NANC), and has also received training from the Billy
Graham Evangelistic Association for decision counseling. Mikel is a regular
supporter of “Promise Keepers” and the American Bible Society.
Family
Mikel is married to Sandy. Together they have raised two sons who are now 18 and
20 years old. The youngest son is currently enrolled at Purdue University,
School of Agriculture, and is pursuing Veterinary Medicine. The oldest has been
inducted into the Army National Guard and will leave for basic training in
January 2008. He has scored higher than most other local recruits on the ASVAB
placement test and will enter college following specialized training.
